Meet the Scientists!!

Dr. Cohan, from Rice University, asked us to participate in an air quality study and we were honored! With about 40% of our schools' population suffering from either allergian or asthmatic conditions, this is a topic near and dear to our hearts. So, after our testing season, we got busy!

  1. We had some concerns today. We got VERY different temperatures from what Chron.com did, in air temperature and humidity. We are not sure what is going on. Our air temp was higher (we got 96F) and our humidity was much lower (39% and Chron.com said 71%). So this afternoon, we will take our temperatures again to see if anything changes. If not, it may be our instruments.

  2. Although our measurements seemed to be a little off today, we did make this cool flip book to represent the Layers of the Atmosphere. Check it out on our "extra projects" link!

  3. It's exciting to see your photos carrying out the measurements and see the project take shape. Keep up the good work!

  4. Official temperature measurements like those reported by Chron.com are taken in the shade about 2 meters above ground in an open grassy area. You may be getting higher temperature readings if your measurement area is not fully shaded, or if they're affected by heat retained by surfaces like buildings, sidewalks, or parking lots. Aim to be consistent in where and how you take your measurements so that you can track day-to-day variability, even if you don't get a perfect match with official data.
